Based in Baltimore, Maryland, Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is one of the leading research and academic institutions in the world. JHU is the first university in the Western Hemisphere founded on the model of the European research institution. It also holds the distinction of being the nation’s first university to teach through seminars, instead of only through lectures. Opening its doors in February 1876, the university is named after its benefactor, Johns Hopkins – a Baltimore merchant who bequeathed $7 million for the foundation of the university and Johns Hopkins Hospital. JHU includes eight academic divisions including the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, the G.W.C Whiting School of Engineering, the School of Professional Studies in Business and Education, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Peabody Institute, and the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), in Washington, D.C. Undergraduate and graduate studies, part-time and non-credit studies, summer programs, and distant education are among the programs offered at JHU. Some of the undergraduate and graduate departments are Astronomy, Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, Creative Writing, Economics, Environmental Engineering, Film and Media Studies, German, History, International Studies, and Romance Languages. JHU has three campus locations: in Baltimore, Montgomery County, and Washington D.C. Homewood is the campus headquarters of the university. Other Hopkins campuses are the Bayview Medical Center, Bologna Center, Charles S. Singleton Center at the Villa Spelman, and Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies. Adjacent to Charles village in north Baltimore, Homewood is the main campus for the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, School of Professional Studies in Business and Education, and the Whiting School of Engineering. In addition, the Sheridan Libraries at the campus provide major research library resources for the university. The School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, and the Bloomberg School of Public Health, are in East Baltimore, which share a campus with the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Founded in 2003, the Information Security Institute is the university’s core institute for research and education in information security, assurance, and privacy. Further, JHU operates an Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), which undertakes research for the U.S. Department of Defense, NASA, and other governmental agencies. The university also has academic facilities in Nanjing, China, and Italy.
