NEEDS HISTORICAL CONTENT Northwest Texas Healthcare System (NWTHS), owned by a subsidiary of Universal Health Services, Inc., strives to provide innovative healthcare services in Amarillo and the surrounding region. The 489-bed, acute care medical center is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). As a premier health care system, NWTHS offers more than 38 medical specialties. The Heart Hospital of Northwest is recognized for its outstanding cardiology services. Advanced diagnostic and rehabilitation services are available. Also, research studies in the development of new heart treatments are in progress. The Children’s Hospital, a member of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions, extends its services in more than 40 pediatric subspecialties. Joint Care Center is a specialized treatment unit for patients recovering from hip and knee replacement surgery. The Diabetes Center aims to manage all aspects of diabetes care. The professional social workers at the Patient Family Services Department provide support and guidance for all health issues. The Pavilion is a behavioral health unit in NWTHS that provides mental health treatment. Other medical specialties include anesthesiology, audiology, pathology, radiology, gastroenterology, obstetrics/gynecology, neurology and neurosurgery, nuclear medicine and renal/kidney disease. NWTHS, as part of an academic medical center, is a training site for more than 150 medical students and residents. A series of community education seminars and lectures are given. The hospital campus includes such facilities as an information desk, cafeteria, vending machines, waiting areas and gift shop. Interpreter services are available for non-English speaking and hearing-impaired patients.
