U.S. Merchant Marine Museum

The U.S. Merchant Marine Museum is situated on Jackson Street in Anderson, Indiana. It is devoted to the U.S. merchant seaman of World War II, who volunteered to deliver the cargos of men and supplies overseas. The museum was founded in 1979 by George R. Canaday, along with his brother Joe R. Canaday, who served in the Merchant Marines. They worked together on many ships, as seamen first and later as officers. U.S. Merchant Marine Museum exhibits uniforms, medals and pins, seaman papers, insignia, ships models, and ship instruments. A reference library is also available within the premises. At the present time, Mr. Canaday has documented 65 of the merchant seamen from Madison County, both living and dead.
