Founded in 1919, John Brown University (JBU) in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, provides a Christ-centered education that prepares people to honor God and serve others by developing their intellectual, spiritual, and professional lives. This private, Christian university serves about 2,000 students from all over the U.S. and around the world. Named after John E. Brown Sr. - a widely recognized evangelist and publisher - JBU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), and American Council for Construction Education (ACCE). Initially it was started as Southwestern Collegiate Institute, an academy and junior college. Over the years, it underwent tremendous changes and came to be known as John Brown University. This vibrant and growing independent Christian university offers more than 50 undergraduate degree programs, three degree completion programs and six graduate degree programs. It provides undergraduate degree programs in the areas such as Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Music Education degrees. With specialization in Counseling, Business, Ministry and Leadership, and Ethics, Master's Degree Programs are offered at three locations - the Main Campus, the Northwest Center, and the Fort Smith Center. In addition, Advance Degree Completion Program, International Study Programs, Intramural Program and Honors Program are provided. The library at the university holds more than 120,000 items in its collections and offers a variety of services such as individual and group instruction sessions and interlibrary loan. Collections at JBU Archives include print articles; the Lantern-a monthly publication; videos; artifacts from JBU history; historical items; and pieces of art from personal collections. Campus facilities include the Walker Student Center, J. Alvin Residence Hall, William H. Bell Science Hall, a Career Development Center, and a Counseling Center. Various clubs and organizations are provided for promoting sports, games, and other activities. Scholarships, grants, loans, and fellowships are available to qualified applicants.
