Founded in 1934, Eastern New Mexico University, in Portales, is the youngest state university in New Mexico. The university, which started as a junior college, gradually added more courses. It has a two-year branch campus in Roswell and an instruction center in Ruidoso. The main campus of Eastern New Mexico University is spread over an area of about 400 acres, and houses a broadcast center, a theatre center, and a newly developed computer center. In addition, a student-operated radio station is located within the campus. Golden Library houses a wide variety of books, historical photographs, oral histories, and more than 300 works of art. The papers of New Mexico Congressman Harold Runnels are also stored in this library. The world-famous Jack Williamson Science Fiction Library, stocked with Jack Williamson’s books, magazines, and manuscripts, is an added attraction. Eastern New Mexico University covers more than 50 majors and several pre-professionals programs. It manages the College of Business, College of Education and Technology, College of Fine Arts, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Graduate School.
