Athens-Ben Epps Airport (AHN), owned by Clarke County, serves Athens and Clarke County, Georgia. The facility lies at an altitude of 808 feet, at 1010 Ben Epps Drive, about three miles from Athens and 60 miles east-northeast of Atlanta. The airport is named after Ben T. Epps Sr., Georgia's first aviator. He began to build and fly airplanes in Athens in 1907. His flight occurred only four years after the Wright brothers' first-ever flight in 1903. In 1917, Ben T. Epps opened the Ben Epps Airport, Georgia’s first airport. In 1919, Epps and Monte Rolfe rented the present airport acreage and operated a flying service. Athens-Ben Epps Airport is served by regional carriers with direct flights to other cities in the southeastern United States. The towered field has more than one runway. The longest is a paved runway extending 5,522 feet. The airport offers both 100LL and Jet A, as well as courtesy transportation. Its two charter services include Air Star and U.S. Jets. Airport services include airframe service, power-plant service, air freight, agricultural operations (aerial spraying), charter flights, flight instruction, aircraft rental, and aircraft sales. Long- and short-term parking facilities are available. Georgia Flight Academy, situated inside the main terminal building, is a full-service flight school offering private courses all the way through ATP courses. A wide range of aircraft, including Cessna, Piper, and Beechcraft, are available here. The Classic City Aviation in the Air Star Hangar fulfills a childhood dream of learning to fly. Hertz Rent-A-Car, the only car rental company at Athens-Ben Epps Airport, rents all types of vehicles from such compact cars as Ford Escort and Dodge Neon, such mid-size cars as Honda Civic and Ford Focus, to the full-size Ford Taurus and Honda Accord. Many luxurious hotels are located nearby. Holiday Inn Athens, Courtyard by Marriott Athens Downtown, and Express Athens Downtown are within about four miles of the facility.
