Loyola Marymount University

Situated in the heart of Southern California, Loyola Marymount University (LMU) is a private, co-educational Roman Catholic university in the United States. It is one of the 28 Jesuit universities in the United States and one of five Marymount institutions of higher education. Established in 1911, the student-centered university provides a challenging liberal arts and sciences curriculum with a commitment to social justice. It was started as Los Angeles College by the Society of Jesus. To reflect its growth and expansion, it changed its name to Loyola College of Los Angeles in 1918. In 1920, it opened a law school and moved to the present Westchester campus in 1929. With the receipt of university status in 1930, it became Loyola University. In 1933, the religious of Sacred Heart of Mary started Marymount Junior College in Westwood and later moved to the Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1960. Eight years later, it moved its operation to the Westchester campus of Loyola University. In 1973, the colleges merged to form Loyola Marymount University. Accredited regionally by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the university offers more than 80 degree tracks and programs at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. It is organized into such colleges and schools as the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, College of Business Administration, College of Communication and Fine Arts, Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering, Loyola Law School, School of Education, and School of Film and Television. Through the above schools and colleges, it offers the bachelors degree with specialization in wide range of subjects. In addition to the above, the Graduate division offers curricula leading to certificates and to the degrees of Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.), Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.), Master of Science (M.S.), and Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E). LMU extension programs provide educational opportunities to many different students. To enhance the learning process, a Learning Resource Center is provided on the campus. The office of Disability Support Services provides specialized assistance and resources that helps students with physical, perceptual, emotional, and learning disabilities. The university offers financial aid to athletes for basketball, baseball, track and field, other sports, and in general. To promote sports and other activities, the university supports various clubs and organizations. It fields sports for men and women, including basketball, crew, tennis, and soccer.
