Louisiana Technical College at the Gulf Area Campus is a public institution situated in Abbeville, Louisiana. The campus consists of a multicultural population, encompassing much diversification in the way of ideas, traditions, values, skills, and arts. The College is part of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS). Governed by the Louisiana Board of Regents, LCTCS is composed of seven districts with forty campuses. The Louisiana institution is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE). This accreditation means that, nationally, the campus is recognized as meeting standards of training acceptable for accreditation. Louisiana’s present day Technical College System, originally known as “Trade Schools,” commenced with the establishment of the first campus in Bogalusa in November 1930. It was completed with funds given by local sawmill workers, school children, and other citizens. Initially, the LCT provided training in woodworking and automobile mechanics. The second school was founded in 1936 at Shreveport. Over the years, more LCT campuses came into existence, including Louisiana Technical College- at the Gulf Area Campus. Louisiana Technical College at Abbeville offers individuals with learning opportunities reliable for identified student, business and industry needs within a life-long learning environment. Currently, it has 11 programs leading to associates degrees and 2-4 year degrees. Major degree programs include accounting technician, administrative assistant, computer installer and repairer, data processing technology, diesel engine mechanic and repairer, nurse assistant and drafting general. The college has a variety of student services. Instructors have both an educational background as well as occupational experience in the technical areas.
