The Highlands Museum and Discovery Center is located in downtown Ashland, Kentucky. The museum displays objects relating to the cultural, social and industrial history of eastern Kentucky. Featured exhibits include vintage clothing, World War II memorabilia, industrial exhibits, Native American artifacts, antique toys, telephones, and early radios. The Highlands Museum and Discovery Center boasts a Discovery Center which helps the pre-school and elementary children to learn through fun. Special exhibits include Poage Landing: Life on the River, The Frank and Margaret Adkins Aviation Exhibit, and The Riverbank. The newly launched ZoomZone offers interactive activities for children. The Country Music Heritage exhibits memorabilia and biographies of numerous renowned country music artists who came from towns either on or near US 23, including Ricky Skaggs, Loretta Lynn, Keith Whitley, Patty Loveless, Crystal Gayle, Billy Ray Cyrus, Tom T. Hall, Hylo Brown, and Naomi, Wynonna and Ashley of the Judd family. The museum also features several history exhibits such as Dig archeology, a Salute to the World Wars, One Room Schoolhouses in Eastern Kentucky and A Scrapbook of Ashland. The Highlands Museum and Discovery Center frequently conducts several discovery workshops, outreach programs, and professional development for teachers and students. Discovery workshops provide an enrichment opportunity for the classroom or after-school program.
