California State University at Los Angeles, also known as Cal State L.A., is a member of the California State University system. It offers excellent and innovative educational opportunities to an urban student population that reflects the diversity of the Los Angeles basin. Founded in 1947 by an Act of the California legislature, the university was then known as Los Angeles State College, and then was renamed Los Angeles State College of Applied Arts and Sciences, in 1949. It changed its name to California State College at Los Angeles, when it became part of the state system in 1964. Gaining university status, it came to be known as California State University, Los Angeles. A wide range of academic degrees, certifications, and programs are available at the campus. The university is organized into six colleges - the College of Arts and Letters; College of Business and Economics; Charter College of Education; College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology; College of Health and Human Services; and College of Natural and Social Sciences. The campus provides facilities such as the student health center, the writing center, the tutorial center, and the testing center. Study abroad and exchange programs, a general education honors program, research opportunities, and several international opportunities, are offered through the university. Additionally, it offers services for students with disabilities. For the convenience of students at different locations, it provides Extended Education. At the heart of the campus is John F. Kennedy Memorial Library, dedicated to supporting the academic programs of Cal State L.A. through instruction, collections, technology, and services which enable students and faculty to access various information resources. It holds circulating books, reference books, a collection of just less than 200 historical and geographical atlases, periodicals, a collection of electronic books and a Government Publications collection. The Luckman Fine Arts Complex at the campus hosts music, theater, dance, and visual arts events. Through various student publications, it gives students an opportunity to develop skills in writing, photography, and advertising. The University Times, a student-run newspaper, is published on Mondays and Thursdays during the fall, winter, and spring quarters. Through the office of Financial Aid, it offers financial assistance for eligible students. To promote athletics, the campus fields 11 team sports for men and women including soccer, cross country, soccer, volleyball, track and field, baseball, and tennis.
