Alta Bates Hospital of Berkeley, California, is a heritage hospital of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, the largest nonprofit private medical center in the East Bay region. The hospital was founded as an eight-bed facility (Alta Bates Sanatorium) in 1905 by Nurse Alta Alice Miner Bates, to serve women and their infants. Today, it has grown to a 555-bed facility that provides high-quality, affordable medical care to the community. The hospital offers women and infant, heart and vascular, occupational health, rehabilitation, and mental-health services. Bone marrow and kidney transplant programs are available.
