University Hospital, based in Augusta, is a part of the University Health Care System.Tthe largest health care provider in Georgia, this 551-bed facility was established in 1818. University Hospital is recognized as the state’s second oldest hospital and the oldest in the city. University strives to provide improved, high-quality care to the patients. As a non-profit community hospital, it is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and provides a range of health services, from routine preventive and diagnostic care to advance cardiovascular and oncology services. University’s Cardiac Services was the first in the area to perform a cardiac catheterization program and holds the credit to conduct Georgia’s first heart transplant in 1984. The Cancer Center, with the accreditation of American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer, offers a full continuum of diagnostic and treatment options.
