California Baptist University, also known as Cal Baptist, or CBU, is a private, Christian, liberal arts institution in Riverdale, California. It is the only Southern Baptist college or university on the West Coast. The university was founded as California Baptist College in 1950 by the Los Angeles Baptist Association. Four years later, the college earned its charter from the State of California, and in 1955, it moved from El Monte to its present location. It obtained regional accreditation by the Western College Association in 1961. Finally, in 1988 the college officially gained university status and became California Baptist University. That year, the university ranked among the top five regional liberal arts colleges for student-faculty ratio by U.S. News & World Report. Managed by the California Southern Baptist Convention, the university comprises seven academic divisions: College of Arts and Sciences, School of Behavioral Sciences, Dr. Robert K. Jabs School of Business, School of Christian Ministries, Dr. Bonnie G. Metcalf School of Education, Shelby and Ferny Collinsworth School of Music, and School of Nursing. Undergraduate, graduate and teacher credential programs are offered in numerous fields. An evening-degree completion program is available for adult learners. Above all, it the only university in the world to offer an online M.B.A. program with its prime emphasis on Church Business Administration. Spread over 90 acres, the campus includes 27 buildings and is well known in the region for its Mission Revival-style architecture. The 94,800-square-foot Eugene and Billie Yeager Center, the state-of-the-art JoAnn Hawkins Music Building, the 320-seat Wallace Book of Life Theater, the Annie Gabriel Library, and the Aquatic Center are some among the facilities. There also is a residence facility on the campus.
