University of La Verne

The University of La Verne, located at 1950 Third Street in La Verne, California, is a coeducational university, organized as a corporation under the laws of the State of California. Through its academic and co-curricular programs, the university offers rich educational experiences that relate both academic and personal development of students. The history of the university is traced back to 1891, when members of the Church of the Brethren, moved west to California, and opened Lordsburg College. In 1917, the community of Lordsburg was renamed La Verne, and the institution followed suit, as La Vwerne College. Famed as the renowned provider of teacher education, the college grew to meet the expanding educational needs of the community. In 1955, the college was accredited by the Western College Association. It awarded its first masters degree in 1965, and conferring its first doctorate in 1979. As a part of its expansion, the college started degree programs at off-campus in 1969, the College of Law in 1970, and a campus in Orange County in 1981. Considering the drastic progress, the college was reorganized as the University of La Verne, in 1977. The University of La Verne offers 88 bachelors and masters degrees, along with four doctorates. These degrees are delivered through the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Public Management, the College of Education and Organizational Leadership, the College of Law, and the School of Continuing Education. In addition, the Distance Learning Center of the university supports students with flexibility in scheduling and geographic location. The university’s library system is inclusive of two state-of-the-art libraries, the Wilson Library and the Law Library. With 27,000 square feet of space, the Law Library holds approximately 280,000 volumes and volume equivalents, and can accommodates 300 library users. The Wilson Library has a wide range of management science and doctoral research books. Other facilities provided by the university are a mediation center, on/off campus housing, counseling center, and a health center. The University of La Verne is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities, the American Psychological Association for psychology program, and is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for offering credentials in several areas. The university’s College of Law is accredited by the Committee of Bar Examiners for the State of California.
