University of Hartford, is an independent, nonsectarian, coeducational university based in West Hartford, Connecticut. The university had its origin in 1877, when Hartford Society for Decorative Art opened its doors at the Wadsworth Atheneum, the oldest public art museum in the nation, and later formed the Hartford Art School. Named in honor of the U.S. Civil War General Charles Hillyer, Hillyer College was started in 1879. Opening in 1920, Hartt School became one of the most recognized schools in the nation for its music, dance, and theater. These schools merged and officially opened the University of Hartford on Bloomfield Avenue in February 1957. The university was recognized as a National Space Grant College, in 1988. Today, the university has grown into a vibrant learning community of the area. The university, other than the three schools, encompasses the College of Arts and Sciences, Barney School of Business, College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions, and the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture. It offers graduate and undergraduate programs in various fields such as business, nursing, visual and liberal arts, technology, and education. The university also hosts a variety of youth programs. The main campus, on 340 acres, is home some prominent buildings including the Harry Jack Gray Center, Village Lawn, Alfred C. Fuller Music Center, Auerbach Hall, Hillyer Hall, and the University Residences. Mortensen Library, Allen Memorial Library, and the Joseloff Gallery are housed in the Gray Center. The George J. Sherman and Lottie K. Sherman Museum of Jewish Civilization, at the entrance to Mortensen Library, features the archeological, historical, and cultural aspects of Jewish civilization. The Sports Center includes the Al-Marzook athletic fields, Chase Family Arena, Hawk Cafe, Student Health Center, gymnasium, and the Mary Baker Stanley Pool. Village Market, a brand new retail marketplace, is situated in the Konover Campus Center at the center of residential student activity. The university also rents its facilities such as Gray Conference Center and Lincoln Theater. Also, there is 91.3 MHz FM public radio station, WWUH. The Hartford College for Women campus is located on a 13-acre plot on Asylum Avenue. In addition to academics, the campus provides housing options for women in 14 townhouses and Johnson House.
