Eastern Illinois University was founded in 1895, in Charleston, Illinois. The university offers a full range of undergraduate degrees and master’s degree programs. The public university is among the top 15 universities in the United States. The state university was started as Eastern Illinois State Normal School and functioned as a teacher’s college offering a two-year degree course. In later years the curriculum was expanded to offer Baccalaureate and Master's degrees in various disciplines. The first building on campus was built in 1899, and was known as Old Main. It was built of Indiana limestone in a heavy Gothic revival style with turrets, towers, and battlements. This is one of five “castles” built in the 1890s in the Illinois state college system. The various colleges under Eastern Illinois University include the College of Arts and Humanities, College of Education and Professional Studies, College of Sciences, Center for Academic Support and Achievement, Graduate School, Honors College, Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences, and the School of Continuing Education. The College of Education remains as the largest department in the university. Eastern Illinois is the home to the only NCAA Division I women's rugby team in the United States - the possible presuror to the game's expansion and popularity. The Eastern Illinois University Police Department on campus provides services for the safety and welfare of the community. EIU has one of the safest campuses in the United States and organizes crime prevention and safety awareness programs. Eastern Illinois University has been named as one of the top mid-western public universities by U.S. News & World Report, ranking eighth. Other facilities include an on-campus residence program and a counseling center.
