East Tennessee State University, located in Johnson City, Tennessee, is a coeducational institution of higher learning, operated by the Tennessee Board of Regents. Through its exceptional academic programs and co-curricular opportunities, it strives to provide a high-standard, student-centered community of learning. ETSU is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. East Tennessee State University traces its beginnings to 1911, with the founding of East Tennessee State Normal School. To reflect its dynamic growth, the school’s name was changed to East Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925, State Teachers College, Johnson City in 1930, and East Tennessee State College in 1943. Later, in 1963, the college was granted university status, and was renamed East Tennessee State University. Recognized as the sixth-largest system of higher education in the nation, ETSU is a Carnegie Foundation-designated doctoral/research-intensive institution. It offers nearly 200 undergraduate, graduate, and medical programs. The university broadens its academic work through the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business and Technology, Education, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public and Allied Health, and the Honors College, and the schools of Continuing Studies and Graduate Studies. More than 100 courses are offered online. The university sits on a 350-acre main campus, in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. It includes a number of outstanding facilities - the Harry D. Powell Astronomical Observatory, the Scott M. Niswonger Digital Media Center, Jerry Robertson BUCSPORTS Athletic Medicine Center, Frederick B. Warren - William B. Greene Jr. Golf Center, and the Buccaneer Ridge Apartments. The Charles C. Sherrod Library has an exceptional collection of more than 800,000 print volumes, as well as microforms, audiovisual media, maps, and government documents. The Center for Physical Activity is a complete recreational facility with an aquatics center, aerobics and martial arts studio, basketball courts, fitness centers, indoor track, racquetball and squash courts, and meeting rooms. In addition, East Tennessee State University has extended regional campuses in Kingsport, Bristol, and Elizabethton. Courses are also available in nearby Greenville.
