University of Illinois at Springfield is the smallest of the three major campuses of the University of Illinois. The public, coeducational institution is located on a 746-acre campus on the southeast side of Springfield, Illinois. Chicago is about 200 miles northeast, while St. Louis is approximately 100 miles southwest. The Illinois General Assembly founded this University in 1969, as Sangamon State University. It became a campus of the University of Illinois in July 1995. Thereafter it has been known as the University of Illinois at Springfield. UIS has approximately 170 full-time faculty. The current enrollment is about 4,500 including 2,000 graduate students. Degree programs include 20 bachelor's degree programs with 25 minors, 18 master's degree programs, and one doctoral degree. The Springfield campus is dedicated to high-quality education with opportunities for integrating academic and curricular experiences. It is the home of the College of Business and Management, the College of Education and Human Services, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the College of Public Affairs. The university's courses are available during the day, in the evenings, and on weekends, as well as online. There is also the opportunity to learn at the Capital City Center in downtown Springfield, or at the Peoria Center. Academic resources include a wireless campus, "smart classrooms", the Norris L. Brookens Library, PC and Mac computer labs, television studio, media services, and web and e-mail accounts to all registered students without charge. The holdings at the Brookens Library include books, magazines, journals, newspapers, videos, DVDs, sound recordings, and virtually all of their government publications. The latest addition to the school, University Hall, completed in August 2004, contains admissions, registration, and financial assistance offices, smart classrooms, and faculty and staff offices. Apart from studies, students are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. UIS has a long tradition of being a leader in athletics and other sports. The university’s culture and entertainment section includes the Visual Arts Gallery and the Studio Theater, which is ideal for intimate theatrical productions, multi-media presentations, and public forums. The Music Program at UIS is open to all students, faculty, staff, and community members. The University of Illinois at Springfield's Facility Services, a service-oriented unit within the Department of Physical Planning and Operations, and the Sangamon Auditorium, are responsible for providing a wide variety of campus services to the staff, students, and faculty. All services and activities are available to full- and part-time students.
