Marquette University is a Jesuit co-educational university based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Since 1881, the university has been committed to providing unparalleled educational opportunities to the people in and around Milwaukee. Marquette University was established by the Society of Jesus as a small liberal arts school, named after Father Jacques Marquette. The school offered its first bachelor’s degree in 1887. In 1907, the school attained the status of a university and move to North 12th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue. Gradually the university added new colleges including the College of Engineering and the Law School in 1908, the College of Business Administration and the College of Journalism in 1910, and the School of Speech and the College of Nursing in 1936. Today, Marquette University has 11 institutions including the Helen Way Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication, the College of Engineering, the College of Health Sciences, the College of Nursing, the College of Professional Studies, the Graduate School, the School of Dentistry, the School of Education, and the Law School. Through these nationally and internationally recognized institutions, the university awards prospective undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in more than 60 majors. For academically talented students, the university offers a wide variety of merit scholarships. Spread over an area of 80 acres, the university’s campus houses the St. Joan of Arc Chapel, the Al McGuire Athletics Center, the Alumni Memorial Union, Campus Town, and the Patrick and Beatrice Haggerty Museum of Art. Campus Town features 225 apartment units and 21 retailers, including grocery, video and textbook stores, restaurants, and taverns. The Marquette University library system includes the Raynor Memorial Library, the John P. Raynor, S.J., Library, and the Law Library. The Raynor Library is a high tech 125,000-square-foot library, and contains more than 1.5 million volumes in its collection. Marquette University has consistently set high standards for itself which have resulted in being accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Institutes of Higher Education and many other organizations.
