Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) is a public, comprehensive university located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Created by Indiana University and Purdue University, the university is dedicated to serving the higher education needs of northeast Indiana. It is committed to excellence in teaching, student learning, research, and creative endeavor. Initially, Indiana University and Purdue University were offering essentially the same courses at different locations in Fort Wayne. So in 1964, the two schools merged to form the present campus - Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and Commission on Institutions of Higher Education, the campus offers more than 180 programs in which students can earn associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degrees or certificates. It is comprised of ten academic units - the School of Arts and Sciences; the School of Business and Management Sciences; the Division of Continuing Studies; the School of Education; the School of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; the School of Health Sciences; the Division of Labor Studies; the Division of Organizational Leadership and Supervision; the Division of Public and Environmental Affairs; and the School of Visual and Performing Arts. Classes for personal enrichment, career advancement, and corporate training; credit programs and General Studies degree programs are offered through the Division of Continuing Studies. Distance Learning programs, the Honors program, Study abroad program, and Cooperative Education are offered in addition to the National Student Exchange programs. More than 1,500 academic journals, nearly 300,000 books, magazines, U.S. government publications, videotapes, music, and data CDs are housed in Walter E. Helmke Library. As a gateway to research materials, research institutes on campus provide opportunities to research a wide range of subjects. The Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching, Learning Resources Center, Center for Academic Support and Advancement, Health and Wellness services, Career services, and services for students with disabilities, are some of the facilities and services available at the campus. The athletics programs are a part of NCAA Division I. Intramurals are organized to encourage students to compete in a healthy, athletic environment. The Gates Sports Center and Fitness Center are the centerpieces of the athletic facilities provided on campus. Artistic opportunities are offered to students through the art gallery and theater. Also, IPFW offers state-of-the-art housing options.
