The University of Arizona is a leading student-centered research institution, with its main campus in Tucson, Arizona. This flagship university is generally identified as the state’s only land grant institution and the first university in the Arizona territory. Founded in 1885 by the 13th Territorial Legislature, UA is the only member of the prestigious Association of American Universities in the state. It has a long-standing commitment in providing exceptionally strong research and academic programs in the fields of astronomy, plant science, biomedical science, business, law, music, and dance. The University of Arizona is comprised of 18 colleges and 12 schools, which spread across its three campuses. Through these academic units, the university confers more than 150 undergraduate and 200 graduate degrees. The university’s main campus, encompassing an area of 356 acres, is home to the Arizona State Museum – the oldest and largest anthropology museum in the Southwest. The Arizona Health Sciences Center strives to provide health care education, research, patient care, and services to the citizens of Arizona. The Arizona Historical Society is located one block west of the campus. The Flandrau Science Center has a unique collection of science exhibits, a planetarium, and a public-access telescope. Also, the campus includes numerous libraries, museums, herbariums, and arboretums. In addition, UA extends its services through the Science and Technology Park, the Cooperative Extension Service with locations throughout Arizona, and its two satellite facilities – the University of Arizona South in Sierra Vista and UA’s College of Medicine, at the Phoenix campus. Accredited by the North Central Association, the University of Arizona was recently ranked 73rd in the world and 47th in North America, in the distinguished “Top 500 World Universities” list published by the Institute of Higher Education in Shanghai, China. Barry Goldwater attended the University of Arizona for one year before going into the family department store business.
