Saint Peter’s College - the Jesuit College of New Jersey - is a private, co-educational, Roman Catholic college. Committed to academic excellence and individual attention, the College provides education, informed by values primarily in degree-granting programs in the arts, science, and business, to resident and commuting students from a variety of backgrounds. Saint Peter's is located on an 18-acre campus, two miles west of New York City, in Jersey City, New Jersey. Saint Peter's College was founded as a liberal arts college for men, in 1872. The first student enrolment took place in 1878, at the campus on Warren Street, in downtown Jersey City. In 1918, the college was temporarily closed as a result of World War I. When it reopened in 1930, on the Fourth Floor of the Chamber of Commerce Building in the city, women were admitted to the evening session for the first time. And in 1932, the School of Business Administration and Evening Division were started under the name of Hudson College. In 1936, the College moved to its present location on Kennedy Boulevard, between Montgomery Street and Glenwood Avenue. Even though the Hudson College remained closed during World War II, the evening session resumed under the name of Saint Peter's College. Saint Peter's became fully co-educational in 1966, and its branch campus in Englewood Cliffs – a college for adults - was established, in 1975. The institution offered its first graduate program in education, in 1980. The Jersey City campus serves day and evening students in two schools – the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Business Administration. There are six residence halls on campus. Saint Peter's College has two libraries which hold more than 230,000 volumes. The college offers four Master’s programs, 38 Bachelor's programs in its 19 academic departments, and 10 Associate degree programs. It also has an Honors program, individualized majors, and opportunities to earn credits for internships, service learning, and other off-campus experiences. The college also concentrates on sports and recreation, and holds 17 sports teams who participate in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. In addition, it has recreational activities and intramural programs open to students, faculty, and staff as well. Saint Peter's is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, and it is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
