University of New Orleans (UNO), located in Louisiana, was established by the Louisiana Legislature in 1956 to provide public-supported, higher education to the state’s largest urban community. The university campus, which has a total area of 195 acres, is set attractively on the southern shore of Lake Pontchartrain in the City of New Orleans. The university was opened in 1958, as Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Later, in 1974, the university was renamed as the University of New Orleans. In 1962, the university acquired the status of a full four-year, degree-granting institution. It promotes both technological and academic engagements that connect the university with society. The university provides the opportunity for learning and creative discovery through its social programs. The University of New Orleans is supported by an organization named the University of New Orleans Foundation. Local businessmen and civic leaders are among the members of the foundation. The UNO Foundation renders the university the economic support it needed to evolve into a respected educational institution, through its development endeavors. The university offers several undergraduate programs of study through six academic colleges. It is a selective university serving more than 16,000 students and offering more than one hundred degree programs. Business Administration, Education and Human Development, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Natural Sciences, and Urban Studies are part of the graduate school. Educational extension, professional development, and international education activities are offered through Metropolitan College. The central attractions of the university include: The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the University of New Orleans Studio Center, the Higgins Boat Project displayed at the National D-Day Museum, and the Earl K. Long Library. The library is designed to accommodate university students and faculty. As a member of the Louisiana State University System, UNO has grown to become a comprehensive urban university that provides academic support for the world community. The university’s various programs are accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Louisiana Board of Regents.
