University of Portland is a private, Catholic university specifically affiliated with the Congregation of the Holy Cross. Situated in Portland, it is the only school in Oregon to offer a College of Arts and Sciences; a Graduate School; and schools of Business, Education, Engineering, and Nursing. UP lies in the North Portland and St. Johns neighborhood. The University of Portland was founded in 1901; the institution that started with 56 students and eight priest teachers is currently an intellectual community of more than 2,900 students and 240 professors. The university’s academic offerings are vast, which includes 1,100 courses, 60 undergraduate programs of study, and 12 graduate programs. Special academic programs and resources include study abroad in more than a dozen countries and an Honors program for those who are academically advanced. Academic resources complementing student life include a well-stocked Wilson W. Clark Memorial Library, health center, integrated writing center, and math resource center. Student accommodations are available within eight residence halls. Beyond academics, the University of Portland also stresses recreation and sports, which it considers to be vital to the personality development of students. Other activities in the campus include volunteer service opportunities, seminars, concerts or the international cultural show. The University of Portland has been ranked as one among the top 10 schools in the west by U.S. News and World Report.
