Pitzer College is a small, private, liberal arts college located in Claremont, California. The college is the youngest of the undergraduate colleges of the Claremont college system in southern California. Pitzer College was founded in 1963, as a women's college by Russell K. Pitzer (1878-1978), a California citrus magnate and philanthropist. When it was founded, Dr. Atherton became its founding president. During his tenure, the faculty grew from 13 to more than 50 members, the student body from 150 to 650, and the campus buildibg projects were completed. It remained the only women’s college for seven years, until it became co-educational in 1970. Today, the college enrolls about 900 students in more than 40 fields of study. A member of the Claremont Colleges, Pitzer offers a distinctive approach to a liberal education by linking intellectual inquiry with interdisciplinary studies, cultural immersion, social responsibility, and community involvement.
