Claremont McKenna College is a highly selective, independent, co-educational liberal arts college situated in Claremont, California. It covers nearly 50 acres of land in the heart of the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, nestled at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. It is located at about 35 miles east of the downtown Los Angeles. This college is a member of the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate college and two graduate institutions. Claremont McKenna was established in 1946, as Claremont Men's College. It became a co-educational institute, in 1976. Later, in 1981, the college was renamed Claremont McKenna College, in honor of its most visionary and founding trustee, Donald C. McKenna. The college deals with the education of both traditional liberal arts, and professional and technical skills. Some of the major departments are Economics, Government, History, Joint Science, Literature, Mathematics, Military Science, Modern Languages, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Physical Education, Intercollegiate Athletics, and Psychology. The campus has 10 on-campus Research Institutes offering students and faculty the unique opportunity for research, teaching, and learning. CMC has off-campus study - an opportunity to expand the academic career - intercollegiate exchange programs and an internship program in Washington, D.C. The college has residential dorms which are divided into 3 regions - North Quad, Mid Quad, and South Quad. Claremont McKenna College is the youngest and smallest college to be ranked in the U.S. News & World Report as among the top-10 liberal arts colleges in America.
