Youngstown State University, founded in 1908, is a progressive, coeducational institution located in downtown Youngstown, Ohio. Situated amidst a beautiful 140-acre campus, the university, through its seven colleges, offers over 100 undergraduate majors and 24 graduate programs in a variety of disciplines. It is backed by a strong tradition of teaching and scholarship. YSU has over 12,000 students enrolled and a healthy student-faculty ratio of 19 to one. YSU is one of the few institutions in the state that provides associate, baccalaureate, and graduate instruction and continuing education facilities in one location. The curriculum is so designed that the students can pursue interdisciplinary majors and minors – to major in one department and minor in other – or to pursue double majors. The student community of YSU represents nearly all states in U.S. and about 55 countries around the world. Residential halls in the campus house about 1,000 students and include a special residential honors facility. Student services available on campus include: complete tutorial assistance in all subject areas, with special centers for writing, study skills, reading, and mathematics; career testing, planning, and placement; special programs for multicultural, women, and adult students more than 25s old; and an orientation program that includes mentoring by faculty and staff members and upper-class students. Beyond academic contours, students can try their hand in recreation and sports or other extra curricular activities. They can choose from over 130 student organizations, including social sororities and fraternities, and there are ample opportunities for participation in theater, performing groups, student publications, intramural and intercollegiate athletics, and activity planning. Other facilities in the Ohio campus include the state-of-the-art Maag Library, health center, book store, sports complex, and wellness center. The Youngstown State University campus is a one-hour drive from Cleveland, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and 400 miles from the cities of New York and Chicago.
