The Bronx is one of the boroughs of New York City. It is the northernmost of the five boroughs and the only one primarily on the mainland. It gets its name from the Bronx River, which was named for Jonas Bronck, who created the first settlement as part of the New Netherland colony in 1639. The Bronx borough is identical in extent with Bronx County, the last of New York state`s 62 counties to be legally created (in 1914).
