The Great Society was the collective name given to the social programs inaugurated by Lyndon B. Johnson after his victory in the election of 1964. With the support of Democrats who were carried into Congress in that election, Johnson put forward the greatest number of new progressive measures since the New Deal. They included the War on Poverty, VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), and Medicare.
