The Union`s "Anaconda Plan" for conducting the Civil War was to squeeze the south along the Mississippi River, in the manner of an anaconda snake squeezing its prey. The intended result was that the Confederacy would be divided at that point, separating Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana from the other Confederate states.
The plan was successfully executed by operations of the U.S. Navy under Admiral David G. Farragut in taking New Orleans, and the capture of the strategy port city of Vicksburg, Mississippi, by Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant.
