End of the Century

The 1980s saw the rise of conservatism in America, “trickle-down” economics, and the end of the Cold War—symbolized most powerfully when the Berlin Wall was torn down. The HIV/AIDs epidemic caused devastating mortality in the 1980s that eventually galvanized activist groups to pressure government and science communities to provide solutions and treatment for the growing health threat. By the 1990s the U.S. was plunged into another war, the Gulf War, when Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait.

Personal computers, the internet, and mobile phones became ubiquitous and essential tools in modern society and ushered in a new era in communications. The end of the century became embroiled in personal political scandal with the impeachment of president Bill Clinton. Political uncertainty presided over the presidential election of 2000, which came down to a few controversial votes. It was one of the closest elections in history.
