New Millenium
In the U.S., the beginning of the new millennium was marred by the tragedy on September 11, 2001, when militants associated with an extremist group, al Quada, hijacked four commercial airplanes and flew them into several large buildings, resulting in the death of nearly 3,000 people. Terrorism and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq occupied the attention of the nation for much of the first decade.
In fall of 2008, the stock market crashed (largely due to the subprime mortgage crisis) and the country entered into a deep recession. Shortly after, the first black president, Barack Obama, was voted into office. By 2014, the worst of the economic downturn had reversed, and the Iraq war had ended, but war in Afghanistan dragged on.
Smartphones and media proliferation continued, creating diverse television and movie choices, but also contributed to deepening divisions politically within the U.S. Same-sex marriage became legal in all U.S. states in 2015 with the Supreme Court ruling in the landmark case,
Obergefell v. Hodges.
