Westward Expansion

The opening years of the 19th century saw active exploration, settlement, and exploitation of the West. The Northwest Territory received waves of new settlers and its first state was admitted to the Union. The territory of the United States was doubled through the Louisiana Purchase (1803). Lands beyond the Mississippi River were explored by the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-06). The increased presence of whites in the West ignited warfare with the resident Native Americans.
