The Pequot

The Pequot are a Native American tribe of the Algonkian linguistic group and the Eastern Woodlands culture area. Their historic homeland had been in the areas of present day western Rhode Island and eastern Connecticut. Further expansion into the Connecticut Valley led to frequent conflict with the English settlers, culminating in the Pequot War (1637) which virtually wiped out the tribe. The name pequot means "destroyer" in Algonkian.
